The Festival is hosted by the numerous community gardens that grow food in Edinburgh. During the space of a weekend, the participating gardens open their gates and offer fun and entertainment to the public.
This exceptional notforprofit Festival invites the public to visit community food gardens and to enjoy a wide range of entertainment for all ages. The Power of Food Festival celebrates and showcases the transformative work done by volunteers in community gardens, in terms of social inclusion, wellbeing, and environmental awareness.
Last year, 15 gardens took part in the Festival and about 500 visitors enjoyed the event. Activities offered to visitors included introductions to gardening, fun learning about insects, storytelling, and poetry writing; often accompanied by delicious food, sometimes by music, and now and then by sunshine.
“Community food growing is transforming our city. I’m thrilled that Edinburgh is playing host to The Power of Food Festival, the first of its kind in Scotland.” Cllr Lesley Hinds, Chair of Edible Edinburgh
Community gardens are part of our urban landscape and come in many different shapes and sizes. The one thing they all have in common is that they bring people together around a meaningful concept of growing food together, sometimes on the most unlikely piece of land.
